Quantity-based commits let you grant prepaid balances in usage units instead of dollars or custom pricing units. This is useful for free tiers, included usage, and onboarding promotions like:
  • “First 1,000 API calls are free”
  • “Includes 10,000 emails per month”
  • “First 500 documents processed free”
Metronome tracks the remaining balance in units and draws down based on measured usage quantity, not spend.

How it works

A quantity-based commit or credit has three essential parts:
  1. The quantity granted and when it becomes available (access schedule). For example: grant 1,000 free API calls for the duration of the contract.
  2. What usage it applies to (targeting). For example: only apply to certain products, tags, or subsets of usage.
When invoices are computed, Metronome:
  • Calculates usage quantity for relevant line items
  • Draws down the commit or credit
  • Charges overage normally once the quantity balance is exhausted

Common use cases

Free tier or trial allocation

Grant a one-time quantity allocation (for example, 1,000 calls) to new customers.

Included usage with a base subscription

Pair a platform fee subscription with a recurring quantity allocation (for example, 10,000 emails per month included).

API and reporting

Quantity-based commits and credits are available in:
  • Contract APIs (get and list)
  • Customer commit and credit listing APIs
  • The Metronome UI
  • Data export tables
Quantity-based balances are tracked separately from spend-based balances and are not mixed into a single net balance number.
